The holidays bring many people out to the airports, leading to hectic travel. Here are some tips on how to make your holiday travel easier:
Do not wrap gifts. Your packages will be unwrapped by officials to be able to further inspect the contents.
Apply 3-1-1 to gifts:
The Transportation Security Administration's 3-1-1 program:
- Liquids, aerosols and gels must be in containers three ounces or less,
- Items must be put in a one quart, clear plastic zip-top bag, and
- Only one zip-top bag per passenger.
3-1-1 isnt just about your toiletries. Food items such as jams, salsas, dips, etc. will not be allowed through the checkpoint unless they meet the above requirements. This also applies to gift items including lotions, scented oil, perfumes, etc. You should ship these items prior to your trip or put them in your checked baggage.
These items will be allowed on the plane IF you purchase them in one of the gift shops after you have gone through the security checkpoint. These items in the shops have been previously screened and found to be safe.
Know what the prohibited items are on planes. The gift you are planning to carry on to the plane, may be listed under the prohibited items. Many tools, sporting good items, and even snow globes are on the prohibited list. Before you get to the airport, click here for a full list of these items.
Arrive on time. Make sure you have your boarding pass and a valid photo ID upon entering the security checkpoint. Allow yourself a little extra time to check your bags and to go through security.
Dress appropriately. Wear clothing without metal, as it may set off the metal detectors. Make sure keys, coins and belts are off of your person and placed into a bin. Wear slip on shoes that can easily be taken off and put back on after screening. All winter coats, blazers, jackets and bulky sweaters will need to be removed and sent through to be screened.
Be considerate and respectful. The security officers are working to keep you safe. Do not joke around or goof off while going through security checkpoints. This will only slow down the process and make the other passengers angry.
