Spirit Airways has been fined by the Transportation Department for failing to comply with rules governing denied boarding compensation, fare advertising, baggage liability and other consumer protection requirements. The U.S. government fined Spirit Airlines $375,000 for a long list of issues.
Spirit bumped many passengers on overbooked flights, but did not offer compensation. They failed to resolve baggage claims within a reasonable amount of time, and refused to accept responsibility for laptops that were accepted as baggage and then lost.
They were also charged with omitting carrier-based fees from their published base fare and for not responding to and filing consumer complaints in a timely fashion.
Spirit is said to be addressing all of their core issues involved in the Transportation Department case.
