Held only once a decade, the Oberammergau Passion Play will be performed 102 times from May through October 2020. This biennial event sells out up to a year in advance, much like the World Cup, Olympics, and Superbowl.

The History

During the 17th century, the people of Oberammergau, Germany made a vow to God that if He spared them from the Bubonic Plague, they would pay tribute through performing a passion play (depiction of Christ’s crucifixion) every 10 years. To this day, the people of Oberammergau perform every decade as promised.

Oberammergau 2020

The play involves over 2,000 performers, musicians, and stage technicians, who are all residents of the village. It also features a full orchestra of 55 instrumentalists. The performance is delivered in German, but audience members will be given a full booklet translation upon entry. Don’t worry, it is fairly easy to follow despite the language barrier.

In addition to the death and life of Christ, Old Testament stories like the Great Exodus and mockery of Job are woven into the plot. This shows the unfolding of God’s promises and preparation of Jesus’ coming throughout Scripture.
