Making travel plans during a pandemic can raise a lot of questions. Protecting your investment with travel insurance can alleviate several of those concerns, if your policy includes coverage for the coronavirus specifically.

Though most companies excluded pandemic coverage from their policies in the past, many have amended their policies to include COVID-19 coverage – but not all. And when they do, it is still important to familiarize yourself with the details.

What’s covered?

Coverage specifics vary based on the policy. Yet, most will cover trip cancellation if you contract COVID-19 & trip delay if restrictions are changing in your destination country, as well as medical costs if you become sick during your trip. It’s important to note that some policies exclude COVID-19 coverage for countries assigned a Level 4 Travel advisory within 30 days prior to departure. This list changes frequently, so it’s important to keep an eye on your destination’s status.

What’s not covered?

Most policies will not cover cancelation due to fear of contracting the disease or cancellation of an event you were planning to attend. Though “cancel for any reason” policies are an exception to this rule. These, however, are more expensive due to the additional flexibility.

What about the cost?

Another factor that can affect the cost is the travelers’ ages. Some policies offer the same rate, regardless of age; others offer tiered pricing. This is particularly important for both older and younger travelers to note if they want to save a bit of money.
