This statue of Nelson Mandela illustrates his importance as a political figure in the South African anti-apartheid revolution.  Faculty-led trips to South Africa are not complete without visiting Robben Island Prison where he was held as a political prisoner.

Political Science

  • Apartheid & Social Justice - Spend a night in the Robben Island Prison, where Africa's political prisoners were kept during the Apartheid. Hear a first-hand account from Nelson Mandela's ex-prison warden.
  • Emerging Democracies - Meet with representatives of the two opposing political parties (Chadema & CCM) for a fascinating round table discussion of current political issues in Tanzania.
  • Government & Politics - Experience what it would be like to be a member of the European Parliament for a day. Hold a mock session, including: drafting legislation, consulting interest groups, forming alliances to negotiate with other institutions & speaking with the media.
  • History & Political Science - Meet one of the signers of the Independence Act of Lithuania, learn about the Jews' captivity under Nazi control & meet with local political science & history students.

Study the economic and political significance of the Panama Canal - an engineering marvel that provided a trade and military transport route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

History

  • WWII - Participate in a wreath-laying ceremony on one of the D-Day beaches in France.
  • Genocide - Meet the directors of an orphanage founded after the genocide in Rwanda to discuss the repercussions on local children & families.
  • African History - Visit the sites of the Ark of the Covenant & the palace of the Queen of Sheba, learn about the history of the Ge'ez language & meet members of the Karo Tribe & talk about their body painting traditions.

Faculty-led groups can visit the Tower of London's exhibits, featuring criminal justice in Medieval times and learn about the tower's gruesome history of torture and execution.

  • Military Science - Visit an Israeli army base & meet with high ranking military personnel who will share their personal experiences.
  • Human Rights - Visit with members of the African Court on Human & Peoples' Rights in Arusha, Tanzania.
  • Criminal Justice - Walk through the streets of London with a former police officer & criminal justice expert, focusing on the history of the police, criminal law & major crimes that have taken place in the city.

Create a Service-Learning Project

Work with us to design a unique service-learning project to complement your program. Students will have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to support local initiatives within the communities they are visiting. We can even network you with one of our partner NGOs to create an ongoing project for your school.
