The students will talk with a local architect about urban planning & how to integrate contemporary architecture with existing Colonial, Baroque & Neo-classical styles. Students will also meet with local artisans & writers to discuss their work, and learn about the preservation of Cuban culture through art & literature. The group will also visit local art projects to learn how Cubans work together to revitalize their communities through large-scale reclamation projects. Artists collaborate with other community members to create murals & mosaics that represent the particular flavor of each neighborhood. In addition, these areas create new revenue streams for artists who offer classes & sell their work. The increased number of visitors also results in increased business for the community at large.
Cuba's well-protected coral reef system, botanical gardens, mountains & wetlands make it one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Havana’s Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) is one of the largest medical institutions in the world, attracting students from more than 100 countries. And the country’s advanced biotechnical industry has received international attention with the development of the cancer vaccine, Cimavax, which utilizes the body’s immune system to attack cancer cells. Students will get a first-hand look at Cuba’s healthcare system by meeting physicians & nurses to discuss how health practices are implemented at the local level. There will also be opportunities to visit local centers where the group will learn about health education.
Get a first-hand look at Cuba’s complex political system. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how local & national government work together. Meet with members of National Assembly, Electoral Commission & Parliament to learn how they serve the Cuban people & collaborate with other government agencies. During this program, students will learn how Cuba’s education system has become the benchmark for Latin America. The group will investigate the public school system from several perspectives: student, teacher, administrator & governing body.
Cuba’s focus on prevention & health education has helped it become one of the best healthcare systems in the world. They also boast the third highest doctor-patient ratio worldwide. In additional to medical care, there is a strong focus on mental health & these services are incorporated into nearly every aspect of care. During this trip, students learn about programs that may be directly responsible for Cuba’s 20% lower infant-mortality rate & higher life expectancy than the we have in the U.S. Students will visit several key organizations to meet with local care givers around the country. Through these interactions, they will discover the challenges & advantages of Cuba’s universal healthcare system.
This program will enable students to broaden their perspective of business & government-operated trade unions through an exploration of their evolution in Havana & Villa Clara. Explore the scope of Che Guevara’s influence on the working-class & his effect on how government addresses business ventures to this day. Students will also gain a more personal insight into Cuba's trade unions through meetings with union members by discussing their goals, challenges & experiences.
