Overview

Find out how Cuba’s has achieved a staggering 99.8% literacy rate & the role that public education plays in maintaining that rate. The country’s dedication to education is firmly rooted in their post-revolutionary initiative to empower the Cuban people through free, accessible public education. Today, the Cuban government spends about 13% of its GDP on education, more than almost every other country in the world, but that’s just the beginning. 

During this program, students will learn how Cuba’s education system has become the benchmark for Latin America. The group will investigate the public school system from several perspectives: student, teacher, administrator & governing body.

  • Ministry of Education – Meet with specialists at the Ministry to discuss how Cuba has overcome challenges to its educational system
  • Literacy Campaign Museum – Learn about the year-long campaign to eradicate illiteracy in Cuba after the Cuban Revolution

Itinerary

Day 1: Havana

Arrive in Cuba & take a bus tour of Modern Havana before checking into your hotel. Enjoy authentic Cuban cuisine with a welcome dinner. Afterward, enjoy a free evening for you to explore the area. 

Day 2: Havana

Meet with the Ministry of Education’s specialists to discuss Cuba’s achievements & challenges in its education system. Visit the National Teacher’s Association & learn about research continuing education for its associates. Afterward, you will visit the José Martí Memorial & Revolution Square architectural complex. Return to your hotel & enjoy dinner followed by a free evening to explore. 

Day 3: Havana

Start your day with a walking tour of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. You will see architectural wonders such as the Arms Square, the Saint Francis of Assisi Square, the Old Square, the Cathedral Square & the Bodeguita del Medio. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Visit the Literacy Campaign Museum later today.

Day 4: Havana - Cienfuegos

Check out of your hotel & head to Cienfuegos an architectural wonder founded by French colonists in the 19th century. Check into your hotel & enjoy a lovely, authentic Cuban dinner. 

Day 5: Havana

Enjoy a free day. Afterward, reflect on your Cuba experience during a farewell dinner. 

Day 6: Havana

Check out of your hotel & depart for José Martí International Airport to return home.
